Hello to all.I just happened to stumble across this site during a fit of random ?oogle?searches. What a fantastic surprise.I first became acquainted with Professor Harington four years ago.I had enrolled in one of his Art History boot camp?r.. seminars and he was introducing himself to the class.Having suffered from a profound hearing loss of my own as a child, I was immediately intrigued by his style of communication.I developed a great deal of respect for the man and his methods.Heis the sort of college professor that I thought they all would be like.Sadly, he is one of a kind, at a time when the schools need more like him.I went out and purchased a copy ofThe Choiring of the Treesand loved it.I have been buying the books ever since.I managed to introduce several friends to the wonderful placethat is Stay More, Arkansas.I get a sense of pride from that, as if I had something to do with writing the books.Isn? that funny?Anyway, I recently discovered the Toby Press editions and have been mailing them out to friends everywhere. Two of my friends are overseas, and are avid fans as well.I just finished ordering copies ofWithandThe Architecture of the Ozarkssent to Belgium and Iraq.I can? wait to get their feedback. We had some good times withThirteen Albatrosses.Anyway, just wanted to say ?ello?on my first day and say that I really love the website. It is quite nice looking and well organized.I? working on one of my own, and since I? self taught, it is a little on the amateur side.I know this one is well built. My question is: who drew the map on the welcome page?I hopeto be talking to all of you soon.Stay More!Regards.SD

Greetings SD!

Thank you for your interesting post and your kind words about the site.

I know exactly what you are talking about when you describe that feeling of pride.  I get the same way.  Every time I introduce a friend to DH's books and they, of course, love 'em, I feel that way.  Very strange indeed.

The map of Stay More on the page was done by Donald Harington himself!

What will your website be about?  I'm self taught too.  Had to learn in a hurry when my webmistress, for my commercial site, just dissappeard from the face of the earth...

Stephen,

Welcome to the website, and good luck putting up your own. Maybe the webmistress here can give you some hints on building your website. She's done a good job on mine.

I remember you not only from art history "boot camp" but also from several other courses. I also remember you sending my books to your lady friend who was a captain in the Marines. Do you keep in touch with her?

That's NOT a good photo of you that you selected for your avatar. Can't you come up with something better?

Anyhow, congratulations on being the first former student of mine to join the Board of this website.

All best wishes,

Donald Harington

Well, now that I know that DH visits occasionally: I am now visiting in the Juliana section of *13A* and, please tell me if I'm wrong, am I hearing *Sot-weed* echoes that you put there or am I putting them there myself (or both, of course)?

And thank you for *With.* The most remarkable and beautiful novel I've read in years. It has left an in-habit w/in me. Yow.

If there are echoes of SOT-WEED in 13 ALBATROSSES they are purely unconscious. It has been 40 years since I read that delightful novel. But of course, someone (me?) once said that no novelist ever forgets any good book he read, and given enough time he will "use" everything he's ever read.

Thanks for your kind words about WITH.

Dear Professor Harington,

I do indeed still keep up with my friend in the Marine Corps.  She is a major now.  There has been very little communication from her since she was sent to Iraq in January.  I send her books from time to time and she always asks how you are doing.

My other "Marine friend" has just received her copy of With as well, so we'll see how that goes.  They both got a big kick out of their autographed copies of 13 Albatrosses.  I hand delivered those books to them in Charleston, South Carolina, and we talked a long time about what we were all reading at the time.  Now here we are with a new book and no possibility of meeting in person to talk about it, being spread across the globe.

I'm sorry you didn't like the avatar I chose.    I'll look around for a better one.  This one was a picture of Giorgio Morandi.  I've been doing a little reading on him and sort of liked the picture.  I need to get one of my own up there.

DEDFLWRS:  I'm trying to build two websites right now.  one is www.stephendemoss.com and it is just a collection point for photos of my artwork, and I am having a real time trying to get it past the beginner stage.  It will come, I'm sure, and I'm convinced that this is the best way to learn.  Just dive in and swim.  My other little attempt at website building is for a side job I do around town.  It is www.myblueshirt.com .  For the past couple of years I've done little home murals for friends and family and it has reached the point where I think I might have the nerve to actually ask someone for money in exchange for those big wall paintings that take me weeks to do... haha..

Anyway, I'm sure I'll be pestering everyone for ideas and help with this bloody HTML and CSS stuff.  I like a nice clean look that flows well, and so far I just haven't got the finesse for it.  sigh...

Off I go.  I still haven't started With yet.  ( I was in the middle of finishing the McMurtry Berrybender books )

Looking forward to seeing this thing grow!

Regards

SD
